Believe it or not, despite my overbearing obsession, I did not start drinking coffee until a couple of years after college.
Nestled on a corner, nearly dead center in the town of Lansdale, is Backyard Beans Coffee Co., a cafe that will always hold a special place in my heart.
This was where it all started for me. I remember them opening in 2017 and going there for the first time with my mum.
I now have my full setup at home, but I still buy their beans at my local grocery store or when I happen to be near one of their locations.
It’s rare now that I get a chance to sit and enjoy an espresso in a cafe; yesterday was one of those moments, and it reminded me of what’s so special about cafes.
It’s wonderful to sit and ponder, or just take in the environment, the gentle hissing of a frothing wand, people talking in meetings, the chatter of a keyboard as someone writes, the soft laughter of two friends catching up.
Cafes aren’t just a place to get a caffeine fix; they are little seclusions in an unsettled world.
I often hear lamentations of how we have lost 3rd places within our communities after and even before the pandemic.
I can only offer this advice: take a break, or take your laptop, go to your local cafe, ask what the barista recommends, sit, relax, and enjoy the vibes.
Let food be thy medicine
